Self Care Nurse Challenge

Spring is a wonderful time to rid your life of what no longer serves you and focus on what lights you up! ๐ŸŒท

Self care is talked about ad nauseam, especially among the nurse tribe, yet seems so far fetched for many nurses. I believe much of this is due to a mindset that many nurses share. That is, taking care of others, not ourselves is way more comfortable. Itโ€™s โ€œsafer", even though we know itโ€™s slowly killing us.

How dare we actually make time for ourselves? If we are to be great โ€œcare takersโ€ we must be role models and walk the talk.

Itโ€™s time nurses prioritize care of ourselves without shame or guilt. No bones about. End of story. When we put our own care first, we become far more able to live in a way that is not only fulfilling, but actually good for us.

First you must decide youโ€™re worth it and then you must create immensely strong boundaries and decide whatโ€™s non-negotiable for your well being.

Self care has been part of my daily life for as long as I can remember, exercise is coded into my DNA (I actually love exercising) and I adore food and view it as sacred.

However, about 7 years ago I realized part of my self care routine was lacking seriously, although I couldnโ€™t put my finger on what that was. I was happy and life was good, although something was missing. It turns out, my spirit and my spiritual health needed some much needed attention!!

I have added ways to honor and nourish my spirit into my self care routine. These are the principles I teach in my online course, Divinely Guided. It really is a course in awareness and energy. You canโ€™t change something youโ€™re not aware of. They are the ideas and tools that helped me complete my self care routine of mind, body, and spirit. I have more energy and creativity than you can shake a stick it. Oh, and I am having a blast in life and work.

Everyone is different and on a different journey and it is very important to honor your journey. As far as I can tell, there is no separation of spirit from physical health and well-being. So, to be optimally well in my book, my spirit must be nurtured as well.

From Distraught to Divinely Guided

May 2019 marks 21 years that I have practiced as a registered nurse. Thatโ€™s hard for me to wrap my brain and heart around. It doesnโ€™t seem like it could possibly be that long and when I reflect on how much Iโ€™ve grown during that time, it totally makes sense. It is all part of my soulโ€™s growth. 

I went to nursing school after earning a bachelorโ€™s degree in sports fitness management. I assumed since everyone in my family was in medicine and having a background in movement and the sciences that it would be easy!!

Haha. Nursing school was far from easy and my career has been a long and winding road full of lessons and incredible opportunities. 

Nursing has been a wonderful mirror for me to realize what is possible when you do the work, both the internal and external work. 

In my experience, nurses face struggles in life that become exacerbated by the work place. Nurses often transition jobs hoping that things will change and they donโ€™t. In fact, the issues donโ€™t go away the problems keep repeating themselves. Many times there are external forces that are out of your control, however the internal forces within you are just as important. Many nurses donโ€™t feel they are worthy to do that deep work and as a result feel like they have no say in the matter and continue to attract those types of scenarios in work in life. 

I know, because I was in that place. 

Hereโ€™s what 21 years in healthcare has taught me. 

  • You matter. 

  • You deserve to create a life that is both meaningful and healthy.

  • You can be healthy and happy and help others. 

  • You no longer have to sacrifice your health or happiness. 

  • You and you alone are the only one who can decide if this is what you desire. Period. End of story. If this is what you desire, you have to do the work to make that happen. 


I hit a wall seven years ago when I felt trapped in my nursing job. Even though I was part time, I felt like I didnโ€™t have the freedom I desired. I felt like my time was not valued. I felt like my choices were not in alignment with a deep desire to make a bigger impact in the lives of others. I loved helping patients improve the quality of their lives, however, I wanted to help people with more than their physical selves. The stress of work and not living in alignment with my desires became so intense that I had to make a change or suffer the consequences. 

I changed jobs and I went to nutrition school. In my new role as a disease management nurse, I learned that I really had a gift in holding space for others to heal on a whole body level, mind, body, and spirit. 

Along the way, through loads of study, courses, and deep work, I learned how defeating negative and limiting beliefs are in keeping you small. 

I learned how to channel those into more uplifting and empowering beliefs. I learned how to create firm boundaries for myself that are non-negotiable for my well being. 

  • I stopped doing things because I โ€œshouldโ€. 

  • I removed the word โ€œbutโ€ from my vernacular. 

  • I begin owning my gifts and no longer dim my energy, personality, or light for anyone. 

  • I learned the power of honoring my inner kid(s) and how engaging my creativity is the portal to my higher self and all the answers Iโ€™ll ever need. 

My personal development expanded greatly in November, after I completed a passion project that has been the catalyst for me to expand further. FEAR

Fear, like control is an illusion.

PSA ๐Ÿ“ฃ All humans have fear, even the people who have been practicing their art for eons.

It's something you must face head on to work through. 

That one thing you fear the most is the thing you absolutely must do or look at.

Fear is an invitation from spirit to go deeper. 

In the process, you will discover demons and doubt and all the things we each face on our journey.

However, when you reach the other side, you will find that the actual thing that you feared was not that bad, it was your thoughts about how hard and scary it would be that created your suffering.

You may even regret all the time and energy you wasted freaking out about how scared you would be if........  ๐Ÿค”

On the other side of fear you will discover your strength, your capacity, your grit, your resolve, your soul, your gifts, your joy, and it places you on an entirely different energetic plane.

This allows you to reach even higher and deeper for the next round of your beautiful evolution.

I love this card for today. Yesterday in savasana at yoga, I asked my angels and guides to give me a sign about next steps to take it to the next level in life and business and when I got to my car, I pulled a card from my Divine Downloads deck and I got the "ASK" card!

My mantra is ALWAYS, if you don't ask, the answer is always a NO!

Messages y'all!! Loads of them! What are they trying to convey or relay to you?

ENERGY TIPS

Every thing is ENERGY.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it simply changes form, but oh man can it get STUCK or BLOCKED ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I have never had anyone tell me that they want less energy ๐Ÿ˜˜ How about you?

Everything from your environment, thoughts, nutrition, movement, or lack thereof impacts your energy. 

There are parts of your anatomy called subtle anatomy that you can't see that also impact your energy.

This refers to your auric field and your chakras. 

Your auric field is a biomagnetic field (with 7 layers) that is an energetic extension of your chakras . You can think of your aura as your energetic blueprint. โœจ

It's your "vibe", the first thing people notice about you. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ƒ

Chakras (spinning wheel) are energy centers that hold and move energy within and around your body. 

It is said that if you have an emotional issue that is not worked through or processed it lingers in your energy centers and if held there long enough, will actually create physical dis-ease in the body. 

Each chakra correlates to different parts of the body and is represented by a color. For example, your 4th chakra, the ๐Ÿ’šchakra is associated with your heart, breasts, and lungs. It is associated with the color green. ๐Ÿ’š

Things that can manifest for a person with an out of balance 4th chakra are asthma, breast cancer, and cardiac disease. 

I worked as a cardiac nurse for 15 years and many of my patients whom had heart attacks had unresolved anger and tons of stress. Many would report that they "didn't have time to be in the hospital" because they had to tend to their work. ๐Ÿ’”

The point of the chakra system is that it helps keep your body and energy in balance.

Your body's # 1 job is to maintain homeostasis. When out of homeostasis, the body compensates to try and make up the difference.

Here are some simple tools to help balance your energy โœจ

  1. Drink warm water with lemon.๐Ÿ‹

  2. Enjoy a bath with Epsom salt.

  3. Smudge your body/physical space (light a sage stick then blow it out and let the smoke circle around your entire body/living space)

  4. Eat a diet full of the colors of the rainbow ๐ŸŒˆ

  5. Wear clothes with vibrant colors. ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ‘˜

  6. Ground your energy by walking on the earth barefoot.

  7. Get a massage.

  8. Declutter your living space.

  9. Practice stillness, even if for 5 minutes a day.

  10. Use positive self talk ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธand if you find yourself speaking negatively, reframe it with something more loving and kind.

  11. Practice compassion & kindness to yourself and toward others. โค๏ธ

YOGA NIDRA

I learned about Yoga Nidra last month at a Meditation teacher training with the lovely Tara Sherman. I used notes from class and the Bible on Yoga Nidra, "Yoga Nidra" by Swami Satyananda Saraswati as resources to record myself guiding a variety of scripts that I could start a practice by listening with headphones. 

I am forever grateful to have learned this life altering tool. My life will never be the same! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒธ

After 2 months of practice I was able to make it through a Yoga Nidra practice without falling asleep! ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜ด ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ

Sounds easy right? Um, not so much if you are easily distractible and exhausted!! ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜˜

Yoga Nidra is a practice that helps you learn to relax consciously.

This technique induces complete: mental, emotional, and physical relaxation. 

In Yoga Nidra, for absolute relaxation you must remain aware!

Wow! Most of us find checking out to be more relaxing right?! โœ‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€

You have the opportunity to become aware by "rotating your consciousness" throughout different body parts, literally paying attention to your fingers and toes, one by one and all the parts!!!!

It sounds strange, and oh man does it work if you stay awake ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜˜

Yoga Nidra is practiced lying down and you are not to move your body and the goal is to stay awake!

The goal is to turn inward (away from external experiences) and to hone your conscious awareness. 

If you can separate consciousness from external awareness and sleep, it becomes fruitful ground for increasing memory, creativity, knowledge, and personal transformation.

Part of this practice is repeating a sankalpa (affirmation) 3 times at the beginning and at the end of practice. It is said that it is nearly impossible for your sankalpa not to manifest. 

An example of a sankalpa could be, "I am grateful that my needs are met and I receive abundance with ease". Or "I am grateful that vitality fills every cell of my being and I am well".

The part I found most challenging was to follow the rotation of consciousness through various parts of my body while counting backwards from 27 to 1. If you lose count you have to start over. I would get to 24 and already be falling asleep or dreaming about something else!  ๐Ÿ˜ฏ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

So, if you are looking for a practice that brings you complete: mental, emotional, and physical relaxation, you may want to give yoga Nidra a try. 

Using the practice of Yoga Nidra was the catalyst for me to write my card deck so quickly.

Patterns. Habits. Lessons

PATTERNS. HABITS. LESSONS

Life creates all kinds of patterns. Patterns are wonderful tools to shine a light ๐Ÿ”ฆon trends. 

Trends are cool to help pinpoint where you may want to tweak things to create optimal outcomes. 

One of my favorite places to observe patterns is the MIND!๐Ÿง You actually have thought patterns specific to you, that you play over and over. They have their own soundtrack, they're called neural pathways! Your repetitive thoughts literally create grooves in your brain like a roller coaster track!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

These thoughts occur over and over until they  become beliefs (a thought you hold as truth). 

These beliefs are formed in infancy and continue as you age. It is common to adopt beliefs that are not your own, from the person(s) who took care of you in your formative years without your knowledge or awareness. For example, you were always told, "you are just so shy" and so you establish that belief about yourself, even though it didn't come from you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

These beliefs are the driver of your bus. ๐ŸšŒ They are a magnet attracting the frequency of similar beliefs. Like attracts like! If you feel like a victim and that life happens to you, not for you, take a look at your subconscious beliefs. 

You can do "everything else right," but if you're not addressing your belief patterns (especially the subconscious beliefs that lay below the tip of the iceberg), you will struggle to be healthy and probably not reach fulfillment easily or for long. 

Your level of vitality and fulfillment totally depends on your sound track! It can be pernicious and damaging, or a life saver and GAME changer foshiz!!!! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป

There are a few themes that dominate limiting subconscious beliefs: your capacity relating to: worthiness, love, capability.

Your beliefs create energy (a frequency/vibration) within your physical, emotional, mental, and subtle body (your energy field). 

In other words, your thinking can actually create health or dis-ease! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Say what?! 

Yes! It's called Epigenetics. The science of gene expression and how the cellular environment dictates gene expression, not DNA! 

If that's not impressive enough, how about this ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป not one thought crosses your conscious or subconscious mind that does not also effect your physiology! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป

Choose your thoughts wisely ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

The power of the mind is incredible ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Newsflash ๐Ÿ“ฃYou have far more to do with your health than you know!!! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ’ƒ

Now on to habits. Habits are behaviors you do without thinking. Driving to the gym or work. You get in your car and you get there without thinking (autopilot). You even position your body the same way every time!! Reaching for salt and sugar when stressed or worried. Taking selfies when you appear before full length mirrors!!! 

What are your habits? I burn incense to help soothe my emotions. Sometimes I unwind with a glass of Rosey. ๐Ÿท

You can only change what you're aware of. 

What are your thought patterns like?  Super charged with positivity or laden with chronic worst case scenario or somewhere in the middle? 

Finally, lessons. Lessons are situations in your life that you must overcome to fulfill your soul's work. Until you master your specific life lesson(s) they will keep showing up in your life. Think Hero's Journey and The Wizard of Oz

These patterns, habits, and lessons can derail you for decades or just a few ๐Ÿ˜‰you decide ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป Change your thoughts (soundtrack), change your LIFE! ๐ŸŒธ

In my coaching work, I use a variety of tools that work with the mind, body, and spirit- it's energetic properties (the things you may be able to feel, but not necessarily see). The mind and body can not be separated. When one is impacted, so is the other. 

A lot of women are leading life from between the ears ๐Ÿ‘‚backed with a ton of drive and GO GO energy. โšกโšกThis is commendable, I can get behind ambition any day of the week. 

However, when you lead from your head, and don't check in with your heart, you miss all of the incredible gifts brought to you by your intuition. 

When decisions are made primarily from the mind without consideration of what your heart says, they are often steeped in fear or lack and what you're offering the world is probably only a 1/3 of what's possible when you work with your spirit and the Universe. โœจ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

When you allow spirit and your intuitive abilities to guide you, epic magic happens. ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰That is because when you allow the Universe to support your desires, she has a few more resources than you do!!!!

She will orchestrate daddy mac situations that you couldn't have dreamed up yourself!!!

I have been a nurse for 20 years and I used to believe that my job was to "fix" people. After healing many of my own limiting beliefs and m.o.'s (modus operandi)I understand that my job is to be the change that I wish to see and that "true" healing comes when women  really see, feel, and truly embody their innate magnificence that is visible when you peel back years of conditioning and layers of the onion and you remember your true self, your innate worthiness and capacity. Beautiful, whole, intuitive, confident, and loved by self with absolutely zero conditions attached.
